BUPA Recruitment Case Study

BUPA is a global health and care organisation offering a broad range of related services. BUPA Hospitals, now Spire Healthcare, was a key division of the BUPA group, t/o £320m, with c25 UK hospitals. These hospitals were nationwide and locations included Birmingham, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Harpenden, Ilford, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Norwich, Portsmouth, Reading, Southampton, Southend, Tonbridge, Wirral & Warrington.

An internal review of the Commercial Finance and Transactions Shared Services communities identified the need to leverage higher calibre and quality of operationally focused finance specialists and senior clerical accounting support staff that reflected the redesigned business. Key objectives included:

  • Replacement of those individuals leaving the organisation
  • Dissolution of the internal audit function and development of a commercially focused, operational business management accounting function
  • Additional development of a customer focused clerical accounting support function
  • Rationalisation of the recruitment of more business minded Management Accountants, Operations Finance Analysts, Area Finance Analysts, Regional Financial Controllers, Operations Financial Controller and senior clerical accounting support staff, raising the quality of work delivered in each hospital

Harcourt Matthews established a recruitment campaign and candidate sourcing processes encompassing the following elements:

  • Accessing HML network & CV database to identify existing contacts and gain new referrals/recommendations
  • Accessing several CV databases to cover the active UK candidate market including GAAPWeb.com, Reed, Monster, Totaljobs etc
  • Online jobsite advertising including GAAPWeb.com, Reed, Monster, Totaljobs etc
  • Using 3rd party outsourced research businesses to identify additional candidate resource
  • Conducting a regional headhunt campaign
  • Advertising all roles within the Financial Times
  • Organising a direct mail-shot programme to 25,000 CIMA, ACCA and ACA individuals

The project resulted in the successful recruitment of 23 qualified & part qualified and 14 clerical accounting individuals in Phase 1, with additional recruitment on Phases 2 and 3. It also led to our inclusion into the BUPA Group preferred supplier list with ongoing recruitment for both Spire and BUPA.
